On Monday, January 26, 2026, a routine traffic stop by the North Charleston Police Department transformed into a multi-stage pursuit involving a high-speed vehicle chase, a foot pursuit, and a successful perimeter search.
The incident began shortly after 1:00 p.m. when an officer on patrol near the intersection of Dorchester Road and Constitution Avenue observed a vehicle with a defective brake light and illegal window tint. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and the driver, identified as 26-year-old Gerald Jerome Moultrie III, pulled over.
During the initial interaction, Moultrie told the officer he was simply returning the car to his aunt. He proactively informed the officer that he was licensed to carry a firearm and that he had a gun concealed in the front of his waistband. However, when the officer asked if there was any marijuana inside the vehicle, Moultrie stated there was not.
Based on the interaction, officers asked Moultrie to step out of the car so they could conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle. Instead of complying, Moultrie placed the vehicle in drive and accelerated away from the scene.
The ensuing pursuit saw Moultrie driving recklessly through several neighboring business parking lots in an attempt to lose the police. The vehicle chase ended when Moultrie stopped behind a business on Dorchester Road, abandoned the car, and fled on foot into the surrounding area.
North Charleston Police quickly established a secure perimeter to contain the suspect. After a thorough search of the area, officers located Moultrie hiding in a ditch line along Bonds Avenue, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
While the search was ongoing, a manager at a nearby business contacted officers to report a discovery. The manager stated they had witnessed the suspect throw a large, clear plastic bag out of the driver’s side window while fleeing through the parking lot. Officers recovered the bag, which contained a significant amount of a green plant material.
Following his arrest, Gerald Jerome Moultrie III was hit with a variety of charges including:
- Possession with intent to distribute marijuana
- Failure to stop for blue lights and sirens
- Distribution of a controlled substance within proximity of a school
- Public disorderly conduct
Moultrie was subsequently transported to the Al Cannon Detention Center for processing.
