According to the USDA regulations governing this term, nesting boxes, perches, and scratch areas should be part of the hens’ area. Litter and predator protection are also required, as is constant access to food and water.
Cage-free hens only differ from free-range hens in that free-range hens have outdoor access. Otherwise, cage-free hens live in the same conditions as free-range hens. The USDA regulates both these terms.
Pasture-raised eggs come from hens with outdoor access as well. Third-party bodies such as Certified Humane® and Animal Welfare Approved oversee these certifications.
The USDA regulates the term “free-range,” so egg producers that sell free-range eggs must include a USDA seal on their packaging. All free-range eggs are also, by default, cage-free eggs, and some may be pasture-raised and organic as well. The USDA also regulates the term “organic.”
Pasture-raised free-range eggs will bear a Certified Humane seal from Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC) or American Humane (AH).
